PHOENIX (Feb. 24, 2012) — A Glendale resident has come forward to claim Arizona’s third $1 million Powerball second prize from the drawing on February 22.

The $1 million winning ticket was sold at the Albertson’s located at 8950 W. Bell Rd. in Peoria. The winning numbers were 7-16-17-39-51 PB 32.

Since the new $2 Powerball launched on January 15, only three other states besides Arizona have had three second prize winners – all at $1 million each. Arizona’s first $1 million winning ticket was claimed by a Tucson resident, who purchased it at a Fry’s Food Store in Tucson. The second $1 million winning ticket in Arizona was claimed by a couple from Fort Mohave, who purchased it at the Smith’s Food & Drug in Fort Mohave.

The most recent winner purchased nine lines for the drawing using an assortment of his own numbers and Quick Picks. The winning line consisted of his own numbers, which he’s been playing for years. The timing of this win is perfect, since the winner was laid off and is currently unemployed. He plans to pay off some bills and put the rest of the money in his retirement account.

“It was great to learn that someone stepped forward to claim this $1 million prize,” said Karen Bach, assistant director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “Arizona is one of only four states to boast three second place $2 Powerball winners since the game launched and we expect to be congratulating more Arizona millionaires this year than ever before.”

The new $2 Powerball game offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million.

The next $2 Powerball draw is tomorrow, Saturday, February 25 and the jackpot is up to $70 million.

The jackpots are established based on a forecast of ticket sales. In this case, the ticket sales have outpaced the forecast, resulting in the increase of the estimated jackpot amount.

This is the largest Powerball jackpot since June 2010 and since $2 Powerball launched on January 15. The cash option is $202.9 million, the record largest cash jackpot in Powerball history.

“I Love Arizona”

Rondus Bennett of Bouse, a transplant from New York, really enjoys playing the Arizona Lottery Scratchers – they remind her of her home town. Her most recent purchase was simply an impulse.  She’d gone to the store and had $5 left after shopping, so she asked the clerk what was available in $5 Scratchers.  He was just getting ready to open two new packs and held them up so she could see them.  She chose the one in his right hand – Arizona Black Limited. 

As it turned out, it was an excellent choice – a $50,000 excellent choice.  She always buys her tickets from the same store, Bouse General Store, 27646 Hwy. 72, Bouse.  She only bought the one ticket and took it home to scratch.  By the time she got around to scratching the ticket, the store was already closed, and she had to wait until the next day to have the clerk at the store validate it.  Needless to say, she didn’t get much sleep that night.  At 7:30 a.m. she was at the store, ticket in hand, and yes, the clerk told her it was indeed a winner.

The very next thing Rondus did was to drive to the Lottery office to redeem her ticket.  She was very excited about her win and was still finding it difficult to believe. After all, it always happens to someone else, not her.  She has no specific plans for her winnings except, she said, “I am going to enjoy it and consider it an unexpected gift.”
